Flu Season Is Coming: 10 Simple Tips How to Avoid Getting Sick
In the United States, the flu season will start in several weeks, according to medical experts. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services) have published a new statistic of illnesses.
In a line with it, during the 2018-2019 cold season:
- 6.2-7.3 million people have been sick with the flu;
- 2.9-3.5 million people have been to the doctor because of the flu;
- 69,300-83,500 people have been hospitalized because of the flu.
The flu has already spread in 30 states.
The tendency of its geographical range is fast-growing: last week the flu was developing only in 24 states. The peak of illness season is predicted for late January and early February.
H1N1 viruses are the most widespread nationally, but H3N2 viruses are predominated in the southeastern region of the United States.
The main symptoms of the flu are: the body temperature is above 38°C, muscles and joints ache, severe headache, weakness, cough, and runny nose. There are no special medicines for flu treatment: antibiotics do not affect viruses, antivirals are not always effective.
So CDC recommends everyone to get vaccinated as soon as possible.
The main point is a huge role of the vaccine not even on personal but on a public scale. The vaccine can protect all society from epidemic; it will be efficient actually if 50% of people will be vaccinated.
Many people bend negatively on vaccination because they don’t realize how serious the effects of the flue can be.
But the flu is not a common cold for several days. It can lead to pneumonia and life-threatening complications, even for death, especially among small children and seniors.
According to the statistics, up to half a million people die each year from influenza and related diseases.
The antagonists of vaccines are sure, that the flu virus is modifying very quickly, so the vaccination is simply ineffective.
But that’s not true. Yes, there are main several varieties of the virus, and it really is altering very quickly. But varieties serve as patterns for the new strain.
Each strain is different from the previous one, but it retains most of the properties of the sample. And modern trivalent and tetravalent vaccines protect against 3-4 types of virus.
It is not always possible to predict the appearance of unusual strains. Then the epidemics become global. How it happened with swine flu several years ago.
But if you don’t want to be vaccinated or have no possibility to do this, then follow these simple rules.
1. Prevent yourself at work.
Wipe door handles, switches, the surface of the desktop, etc. with a disinfectant napkin. These popular items in the office can be touched by a large number of people – both healthy and sick.
Although have your own dishes, cup, spoon, towel. Moreover, this should be done not only during the epidemic of influenza.
2. Prop up the ideal temperature in the room.
In the cold period of the year, the temperature in the room where you work should not be kept too high. The optimum temperature is not higher than 22° C. It is also important to do airing every several hours.
3. Keep the apartments clean.
The flu is transmitted by airborne droplets, and therefore, in addition to airing, it is important to do regular wet cleaning of the room and humidification of the air. You can use special humidifiers and put wet towels on radiators and heating equipment.
4. Obey the rules of personal hygiene.
Try to wash your hands as often as possible after contact with people and objects. Hands are one of the main ways of getting an infection from a sick person to a healthy. Also, do not touch your mouth and nose with dirty hands in order not to bring infection there.
5. Strengthen your immunity.
All methods are good for this: sports, vitamins, a healthy and balanced diet. Eat more sea buckthorn, garlic, honey, lemon, and dairy products, which are rich on probiotics.
6. Keep proper day regime.
Optimal balance between work and rest, good sleep and absence of stress are important for our health. Try not to overwork and sleep at least for 7 hours. All this will give your body extra strength to resist illnesses.
7. Minimize patient contact.
Avoid crowds of people, especially the desperate madmen who came to work with the temperature. If one of your household members is sick, then isolate him in a separate room. And start the course non-specific prevention for all other family members.
8. Use masks.
They are more helpful in not infecting others. Also remember, the mask should be changed, otherwise you risk creating under it the most favorable conditions for the reproduction of viruses and bacteria.
9. Don’t panic.
The more you think about the possibility of getting infected and imagine yourself lying with temperature, the more chances you’ll have to catch the flu.
10. Call the doctor.
If you are still sick, the most important advice is to immediately consult a doctor and not be a hero.
