Bearded Men Have More Bacteria Than Dog’s Fur
Beards are becoming more and more popular. But there is sad information for hipsters: bearded men have more bacteria in their whiskers than dogs in fur. And that is scientifically proven fact.
A group of researchers from Switzerland’s Hirslanden Clinic came to such results. The researchers collected samples from the furs and mouths of 30 dogs and microbiota samples from beards and mouths of 18 men to determine and compare the number of bacteria.
The results showed that every sampled beard was crawling with bacteria and men had higher levels of microbes than dogs.
Thus, all bearded men aged from 18 to 76 years had a high level of microorganisms in the beard. At the same time, 23 out of 30 dogs had high counts.
Moreover, male beards harbored a greater number of bacteria that were dangerous to health. 7 out of 18 men and 4 out of 30 animals had these pathogens.
In fact, the purpose of the study was to determine if people might get a dog-borne disease through MRI scanner that was used by veterinarians.
Most veterinary clinics do not have their own scanner since it is quite expensive and cumbersome. However, screening is often necessary for animals. In such cases, ordinary MRI is used. This practice confuses many patients because they are afraid of being infected with bacteria, that could keep in scanner after a dog.
So, in “dog” MRI scanners was found a significantly lower level of bacteria than in those scanners, which were used only by humans.
It can be supposed, that dogs are cleaner than bearded men.
But not everyone was pleased with such research results. Critics say, that all these scientists have pogonophobia – the irrational fear of beards. That’s why they came to such controversial results.
Moreover, germs in bears don’t scare women. One of the later researches shows, that bearded men are considered as more reliable and attractive than men without beards. The results of the study, conducted by Barnaby Dixon, were published in the Journal of Evolutionary Biology.
8520 women were interviewed within the research and all of them preferred men with beards. As participants noted, such men were better suited for marriage and family, while men with no beards did not cause any special feelings.
So, a beard was described as the main feature of maturity. The proper amount of testosterone makes a bearded guy more attractive, and, therefore, he seems more suitable for long-term relationships.
But the study relied only on visual perception – therefore, you should not forget about the peculiarities of the character of a particular man.
Nevertheless, bearded men aren’t so kindly to women, as it can be thought. Australian scientists interviewed more than 500 men aged from 18 to 72. The study showed: bearded men treated women more hostile than the smooth-shaven participants.
According to experts, there is nothing surprising about the fact that hostile sexist have beards: facial hair is a sign of courage and dominance.
