All people have different needs for sleep. It depends on age, activity level during the day, biorhythms and health.

In ordinary life, a person takes much less time to rest and sleep does not last longer than 8 hours. People abuse the amount of sleep when they have a lot of free time: on weekends, on vacation, or on remote work with flexible schedules.

If you regularly sleep more than the norm just because you can afford it, there are the problems you may face up in the future.

sleep and health

1. Depressive disorders.

Prolonged sleep provokes depression and fatigue. You sleep more and more – less and less want to get up in the morning, the world around you ceases to enjoy, and sometimes it threatens to turn into serious clinical diseases.

2. Heart diseases.

Heart problems are becoming one of the first causes of death, and prolonged sleep for more than 8 hours a day increases the chance of dying of a heart attack by 34%.

In addition, research confirms that women are prone to prolonged sleep more than men, so they really need to think about the correlation between excessive sleep and heart diseases.

3. Headaches.

Excessive sleep affects brain neurotransmitters and serotonin levels. Even on weekends and holidays, we should not linger in bed, otherwise, we risk waking up with a splitting head.

4. Problems with overweight.

Many studies show that deficiency and excess sleep are directly related to diabetes and obesity.

The reasons for an overweight lie in the fact that we move less than necessary. We late get out of bed, and in the schedule of our day, there is absolutely no time for physical activity.

5. Memory problems.

According to a recent study, excess sleep affects our brain and can age it for 2 years.

In addition, if you constantly get up at night, then you may miss the full deep sleep phase, as a result of which you pour. This affects the cognitive functions of our brain, the ability to concentrate and remember the details.

6. Insomnia.

This sounds paradoxical, but insomnia is often caused by unhealthy habits in the combination of activity and sleep. For example, you stay up late at the computer, and the next morning you decide to sleep off. Two such days are enough to get off the body clock and sleep problems appear.

7. Diabetes.

Either lack or excess of sleep has the same negative effect on the body’s tolerance to glucose. It has been studied, that if you sleep more than 8-9 hours a day, then the probability of developing diabetes may increase by 1.5-2 times!

8. Premature death.

An analysis of 16 large-scale studies, in which about 1.5 million people have taken part, shows, that people, who sleep more than 9-10 hours a day, live less than others. In such cases, there is an increased likelihood of death for one reason or another.

9. Problems with the spine.

The longer you sleep – the worse condition of the spine is. Of course, this is not about cases where the immobility is caused by injuries. If you are generally healthy, your spine is categorically contraindicated for prolonged passive lying and sleeping.

10. Increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Spanish scientists carry out relevant research and put forward a hypothesis: those, who have slept a little longer, in old age, on average, are twice likely to suffer from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

11. Shorter life.

“Malicious” disorders are the most dangerous for health: intermittent sleep, the absence of a regimen, a tendency to oversleep. Blood pressure jumps, the risk of thrombosis increases, the muscles atrophy.

12. Reduced pregnancy chances.

A group of Korean scientists investigated the health status of more than 650 women who agreed to artificial insemination. The onset of pregnancy was most often observed in those women, who slept from 7 to 9 hours a day. Those who slept for 9 or more hours were less likely to get pregnant.

13. Increased fatigue.

This is especially true for people who like to take a nap during the day (but do not suffer from insomnia at night). Scientists have noted: lovers of daytime sleep are very tired. This is not due to intensive work or something like that, but due to painful conditions that sooner or later turn out to be serious pathologies.

14. The risk of blood-stroke.

Sleep more than eight hours a day increases the risk of coronary heart disease and blood-stroke by 33%, experts at the European Society of Cardiology have said.

15. Failures in the biological clock.

With long-haul flights, we find ourselves in the so-called jet lag, when we have to build biorhythms again. It also happens to us when we decide to take a nap in the afternoon or simply oversleep during the weekend. And this not only provokes fatigue but also starts the aging process in our body.

If you want to sleep better and fall asleep quickly – you need to know these several issues.

And how much do you sleep?

Being a journalist is not only my profession but true purpose. I believe that there are no bad thing is our life, but only bad approach to them. If you look with positive on every situation, it will definitely change for the better.
